VA BHHCS is a multi-campus health care system, with approximately 1100 employees, providing primary care, acute medicine, surgery, behavioral health, nursing home and domiciliary care from medical centers located at Fort Meade and Hot Springs, South Dakota as well as a staffed Community Based Outreach Clinic in Rapid City and numerous contracted and staffed clinics in Western South Dakota, Northern Nebraska and Eastern Wyoming.

Duties

The incumbent is responsible to the Community Living Center (CLC) Nurse Manager. The CLC population served is primarily male and older adult (65 years and older), although they are competent to provide care to the relatively small number of women who present for care. In addition to older adults, the Assistant Nurse Manager is also competent to provide care to middle adults (ages 40-64) and to young adults (ages 18-39).

The incumbent is designated as the liaison between the nursing staff and the nurse manager. The Community Living Center Assistant Nurse Manager may directly supervise the nurse assistants and will give input to license staff's yearly performance appraisals. They will also:

  • Be integral in the supervision, training, and scheduling of CLC Staff.
  • Serve as resources for other staff members and assist with daily trouble shooting of various problems on the wards.
  • Have tours of duty for various shifts to assist communications to all CLC staff members.
  • Work to improve staff satisfaction and decrease staff turnover and/or use of sick leave.
  • Nurses in this role help to improve the patient flow on the CLC units.

Location: This position is located in the Community Living Center of the Geriatric, Extended Care, and Rehabilitation service line at Fort Meade, SD.

Work Schedule: Full time, 80 hours per bi-weekly pay period, rotating shifts to include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The American Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations:

The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; ORan ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; ORa Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; ORan ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; ORa BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; ORa Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; ORADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; ORa Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; ORa Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; ORa Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience required.

P*referred Experience:* Minimum of two years Geriatric and Hospice experience.
