This position is located in the Ft. Thompson IHS Health Center within the Great Plains Area Indian Health Service. The purpose of this position is primarily to perform a broad range of preventative and clinical dental assisting function in order to allow the dental team to function as efficiently as possible and serve the intended population in an efficient and professional manner. The position includes a more limited emphasis on routine clerical and housekeeping duties.

- Initially greets and seats patients, adjusting operating table or chair. Collect diagnostic information and obtain and record vital signs.
- Provide patients with chairside health promotion and disease prevention information, individualized oral hygiene instruction, and proper post-operative instructions.
- Proper cleaning and disinfection of the dental chair, dental operating unit and operatory surfaces.
- Assures that dental operatories are adequately supplied with all needed supplies, instruments, materials and equipment and restocked at the appropriate times as needed.
- Applies appropriate X-Ray barriers to patient, as well as applying topical agents such as fluoride.
- Occasional Travel
- Occasional travel may be required for training and/or other work related duties.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Individual Occupational Requirements: NOTE:Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:
* (1)* Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others. * (2)*Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence, as determined by OPM or the employing agency.
All applicants, however, must meet the requirements below.
General Experience: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
For GS-03: Six months of general experience; OR, Successful completion of (a) a 1-year dental assistant program or completion of l year of a dental hygiene program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation that included a course in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting; or (b) practical nurse training approved by the appropriate State, territory, or District of Columbia accrediting body.
For GS-04: Six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience; OR, Successful completion of a 2 year dental assistant program or completion of a 2-year dental hygiene program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation that included at least 12 semester hours of courses such as those shown above for GS-03.
For GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level; OR. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in a dental assistant or dental hygiene program that included at least 24 semester hours in courses as shown above for GS-3.
To qualify based on experience for GS-04 level, you must have experience that included duties such as: Making diagnostic dental impressions, pouring, trimming, and labeling models. Experience in assessing patient's oral hygiene practices providing education on proper oral hygiene aids for home care. Experience in applying appropriate x-ray barriers to patients. Experience in the proper cleaning and disinfection of operatory surfaces and sterilization of dental instruments. Experience in stocking dental operatories with supplies and ensuring all equipment is in working order.
To qualify based on specialized experience for GS-05 level, you must have experience that included duties such as: Experience in selection and proper transfer of the appropriate instruments. Experience in providing oral prophylaxis including the removal of visible and shallow calculus deposits (with or without ultrasonic devices) commensurate with level of training. Experience in basic reversible restorative procedures on teeth. Experience in applying topical agents such as fluoride. Experience in scheduling patients and obtaining required forms related to patient care and records all patient identification, health history, diagnostic, epidemiological, treatment information, and patient education codes.
Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
