Job Description - HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR Position OverviewThe Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Heavy equipment may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, snow blowers and other pieces of equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by legislation, policies and procedures. The Heavy Equipment Operator must deal with residents and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of service. The Heavy Equipment Operator must make note of and report on any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner.1.0 BASIC FUNCTIONS1.1 Operate heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life1.2 Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and efficient way according to all relevant legislation, policies andprocedures1.3 Perform daily safety and maintenance checks1.4 Clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required1.5 Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored1.6 Notify your Supervisor of any requirements for maintenance or repairs1.7 Practice workplace safety1.8 Maintain inventory2.0 REPORTING RELATIONSHIP 2.1 Equipment Operators are under the direct control of the Project Superintendent of his jobsite. 3.0 JOB REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Educational Requirements 3.1.1 Required: High School, Diploma or G.E.D. 3.2 Experience Requirements 3.2.1 Minimum 3 yearsand#39; experience in heavy equipment operation. 3.3 Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 3.3.1 Mathematical abilities at the level required to perform basic measurements and calculations. 3.3.2 Fluency in the English language (read, write and speak) 3.3.3 Reasoning ability (logic) use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems 3.3.4 Must be alert and aware of their surroundings3.3.5 Must be active listeners by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.3.3.6 Select and use training methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new things.3.3.7 Must use the skill of active learning by understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem solving and decision making.3.3.8 Must have the skill to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job. 3.4 Physical Requirements 3.4.1 Must be able to sit, stand, kneel and climb for extended periods of time 3.4.2 Body movements: Walking, turning, stooping and reaching for and carrying materials, steppingover/around obstacles. 3.4.3 Body sense: Must hear well enough to understand oral directions.
