JOB SUMMARY

Must be self-directed with a high level of accountability. Must display professionalism, maintain high organizational skills and manage time effectively. Must exhibit excellent verbal and written skills. Potential to directly impact patient capture rates and increase revenues. Responsible for screening self-pay patients at hospital bedside, walk -ins and phone referrals and evaluates them to determine eligibility in various governmental and non-governmental programs to ensure patients are assisted in meeting their financial obligations and helps complete associated forms. Explains topics of insurance coverage, treatment costs, prompt pay and financial hardship discounts to patients and family members. If the patient has the ability to pay, the Financial Advocate will set up agreeable payment plans. Responsible for identifying all sources of potential payors including Auto Insurance, Workers' Compensation, Commercial Insurance, Private Insurance, third party liability (TPL), etc. to route account appropriately in the Patient Accounting environment. Demonstrates a caring and respectful attitude to all patients, family members, visitors and fellow employees as defined in the mission and values of the organization.Determine patient eligibility through interviews and screening processes. Contacts appropriate agencies to obtain information and paperwork necessary to process patient's assistance applications. These resources can include state caseworkers, banks, employers, Social Security Administration, medical facilities, Workers Compensation administrators, insurance companies and Law Enforcement. Educates patients on various sponsorship programs available based on eligibility. Ensures avenues of reimbursement or assistance are pursued for uninsured and underinsured patients. Refers patients to other agencies for assistance when needed and discusses the financial statement process relating to payment options and hospital assistance. Follows up in obtaining missing insurance information, patient demographics, etc., on patient accounts for the proper handling in the billing office. Communicates with leadership and various departments such as Nursing, Patient Access, Patient Relations, Quality Resource Management and Social Services to address patient concerns. Extensive knowledge of health care related practices, concepts, regulatory and legal requirements. Set high performance standards and deliver leading customer service. Excellent understanding of ADT issues and span of control in the registration areas. Contagious positive attitude. Logical thinking and the ability to acquire an intricate knowledge of modules. Well organized. Strong quality assurance and critical thinking skills are necessary for success in this role.

EXPECTED HOURS

Full-time, 80 hours per two week pay period. Hours range from 7:30-5:30 pm Monday-Friday

QUALIFICATIONS

No other professional credentials would be required. Must fulfill yearly continuing education requirements of the department and hospital. Must complete orientations for various procedures and other training as required. Bachelor's degree in social work, case management, public relations, or related field required. Previous experience in healthcare service or health insurance would be helpful, but not required.
